Tradie rescues woman from house fire sparked by firework on Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula


A quick-thinking tradie has rescued a woman from her burning home after a rogue firework crashed into her bedroom in Melbourne.

The fire took hold just after midnight on New Year’s Day in the house on Alma St at Tootgarook, on the Mornington Peninsula.

Good Samaritan Jon Croft was driving home with his children when he saw flames billowing out the window and sprung into action.

He dragged the 57-year-old out through the window.

“I had to get her out, so I just reached through the window and grabbed her,” Croft told 7NEWS.

“There were things blowing up everywhere.

“She was just saying: ‘All my things are burned. Everything is gone’.”

Police said a rogue firework crashed into the home and the woman tried to remove it, hoping to protect her property.

She sustained burns and is recovering in hospital.

Investigations are ongoing and the fire is being treated as suspicious.
