Comedian Dave Hughes hospitalised after shocking surf accident at Queensland beach


Australian comedian Dave Hughes was hospitalised after painfully injuring his shoulder during a surf on the Gold Coast.

The 53-year-old radio and TV personality described the ordeal as the “worst pain of his life” after posting details of the surfing accident on social media.

Hughes shared a selection of confronting photos, explaining to fans he had spent some of his New Year’s Eve in hospital after dislocating his shoulder at Surfers Paradise.

The father-of-three, who hasn’t touched alcohol since he was 21 wrote, “Happy NY. Had my least sober NYE in 30+ years. Green whistle came after two hours of (the) worst pain of my life, plus morphine and the rest of them. Shoulder dislocation whilst surfing. ‘9 out of 10 level nerve damage’.”

While it’s not clear how the accident occurred, the comedian did credit Surfer’s Paradise Surf Life Saving Club and wife Holly Ife with helping him get to safety.

“Shout out to wife, @surfersparadiseslsc, and GC medical professionals for their much-needed help!” he wrote. “Will be in a sling for a while, not sure when my next right-handed high five will be.”

The injury comes just months after the star of 2Day FM’s Hughesy, Ed & Erin radio show told fans his beloved mum, Carmel Hughes, had died in October.

“My angel mum Carmel passed last night, at home, surrounded by the love of her family,” he wrote.

“She has earnt the rest.”

Hughesy’s father, Des Hughes, died in 2010 from cancer.
